[He's never been the kind of guy to care about underage drinking (unless it goes on in his loft when he's out of town, which only happened and but he's still not over it) so he's not going to give Erica a hard time about that. He just nods in gratitude for the water and drifts idly out to the sun porch, sitting down and settling in like he owns the place.]
So, uh. [He's calling out to her from the other room, which makes him feel like a bit of an impolite dick, but hey. He's done worse to her than use his outside voice indoors.]
Is it too soon for me to ask you about your boyfriend? He's kind of a tool. [he pauses.] I mean-- he's kind of cool. That's what I meant.
[She stops pouring when he says Sam is a tool, but continues anyway.]
Nice, Derek. [She sighs.] Sam is one of the first people I met here. He was the first person to actually try to find out who I was without knowing who I was going to be. He's always been there for me. He knows that I'm a werewolf back home. He thinks it's the coolest thing. He doesn't know what happens to me, though.
Sam is really talented, too. He sings, can play guitar, and he's a good artist.
Really? He's talented? Huh. I thought he was kind of a ditz.
[That's mean. Derek's only teasing, but he's Derek, so all his jokes sound like veiled, aggressive insults. He seems to be aware of this, however, because he runs a hand through his hair and silently tells himself to just shut the hell up and behave better.]
The first girl I dated was a musician, actually. [he pauses.] I'm glad you met Sam. He's nice, he seems good for you.
He's just really positive about things. Trying to see the good side of pretty much anything. [It's one of the reasons why he managed to get her to see the good in herself.]
What instrument did she play? [She brings the water out to him on the sun porch and hands him the glass.]
Positive, sure. [Derek's trying to behave, but--] Are you sure he's positive about things and not just - naive?
[He's arching an eyebrow as if this is the only possible explanation there could be to Sam's, you know, Saminess, but damn, he's really being mean to that poor kid. Blondie makes Erica happy, he reminds himself as he sheepishly sips his water. Derek needs to stop being weirdly protective over a girl who doesn't even like him.]
She played the cello, by the way. [Talking about Paige is kind of hard, though, and he wishes he hadn't brought her up in an attempt to connect with Erica.] Other things, too. But she was playing cello when I met her.
[She takes in a deep breath, trying to just let it not bother her.] He's not naive. I've known him for a while and I love him, so maybe you can stop with your judging. You had a bad first meeting with him, but considering who you are - you might want to think that's on you. Not him.
[WITH THAT SAID...]
Sam plays guitar and he's in Glee club, back home. They're National Champions.
I'm not - judging, I'm just. [He's just, you know. Judging. Okay, god, he needs to settle this the hell down.] I'm just saying he seems kind of... innocent.
[At least by the standards of Derek Hale the werewolf slash murderer.]
He's in the Glee Club? [He's-- he's not laughing! He's just smiling because that's cute! Oh, jeez, Erica's probably going to kick him out in a minute.]
[Erica is not about to discuss how not innocent her boyfriend is. She's positive that Derek doesn't want to hear anything about the things they do that aren't innocent. Instead she just crosses her arms over her chest and glares at him.]
Really? You date a cello player but I date a guitar player who sings and I'm the one with the innocent significant other?
